Robin Simpson
(1908 – 1947) – Simpson left New Zealand shortly after his time at the Auckland School of Architecture to travel in Europe visiting many of the sites of modernist architecture and working in London before returning to work in the firm of Gummer and Ford.
Simpson was involved with the design for the State Fire Insurance Building and also produced a publication ‘Workers Housing – A Scheme for New Zealand’ in 1938, the same year he was to build his unique home in Epsom. Joined Vernon Brown shortly after (1942) but died in 1947. Considered an important and influential but unrecognised figure in contemporary New Zealand architecture until recently.
